The world has lost the most down-to-earth, brilliant, kind, witty, insightful, inspiring and playful artist, and my absolute favorite college professor.

Wayne Thiebaud taught me how to paint with oils, but more importantly, how to communicate with paint and tell stories with my art. He taught me how to see beyond the obvious or ordinary, how to use vivid memories and my imagination as a source of inspiration, and encouraged me to paint whatever I want for the sake of creating it. I learned to appreciate the “everyday-ness” of the images and things that surround me in my day-to-day life. There is so much beauty around us, even in things as simple as a toothbrush.

To this day, as I’m painting I hear his voice in my head instructing me; “don’t get too caught up with the details” and “remember to step back and squint the bejeezus out” of my eyes. He explained how paintings are “never really finished, they just reach different levels of done-ness.” His excitement and curiosity for the constant problem-solving in the act of painting was akin to the joy Bob Ross portrayed on camera.

I remember the day professor Thiebaud critiqued a painting I did of a stuffed animal (the assignment was to paint an object from our youth, by memory). He pointed out how expressive it was, how beautiful and vibrant my color choices were, and how free and bold my brushstrokes were, then proceeded to exclaim, “this is an A+ painting!”

The lessons I learned from Wayne Thiebaud in the ‘90s have remained relevant in my current creations. The impact he made on all of his students and those who admired his artwork was tremendous, and he will be sorely missed.

Rest easy, Wayne Thiebaud.

This week marks 12 months since the global pandemi

This week marks 12 months since the global pandemic was officially declared in the US.
My birthday was also this week. There have been 12 months of birthdays that friends and families have been unable to celebrate (and eat cake) together. But as of this week, things are looking up and hope is on the horizon for 2021.
So to express my anticipation of hope and celebrating birthdays with loved ones* once again, I made this little sketch; “Monthly Cakes” (inspired, of course, by my former professor, Wayne Thiebaud). 🥳🎉🎂🍰🧁
*I suspect blowing out candles will not be “a thing” again anytime soon. 😆

Remembering the Camp Fire, 11/8/2018 💔 At 11:08am, I invite you to observe 85 seconds of silence to help remember the 85 lives lost on this tragic day, one year ago.
Each tree in this painting represents a life lost. The heart’s color was inspired by the color of the earth in Paradise.
On 11/8 each year, may we never forget the Camp Fire, the lives lost, and what it took from the lives of so many. Let us keep Butte County and the survivors in our hearts on this day and each year forward. 💚🌲💛
